Seattle Chosen to Host 2014 National Celebration of Nuclear Science Week

Nuclear Science Week (NSW) is a national, broadly observed celebration to focus local, regional and national interest on all aspects of nuclear science. This year, NSW will be recognized for the fifth year on October 20-24, 2014, and the NSW “Big Event” will take place October 16-17, 2014, in Seattle, Washington.

Through collaborations with national and regional organizations, a two-day public symposium - taking place at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle - will launch the 2014 Nuclear Science Week, providing students, teachers and the general public with an experience designed to encourage education and awareness of the intersections of nuclear technologies and our rapidly changing world.

With the help of the Nuclear Literacy Project and the American Nuclear Society (ANS) Eastern Washington Section and ANS Puget Sound Section, many aspects of nuclear technology, innovation and energy will be endorsed in a variety of impactful and engaging ways. Interested parties and students of all ages will experience workshops, panels and reception events that provide insight to the contributions of the nuclear science in our lives.

“In addition to the regional presence of multiple nuclear organizations and corporations, Seattle is a community that values the arts, embraces technology and prioritizes the environment - Nuclear Science Week is an opportunity to explore how advanced nuclear technologies in energy, medicine and even space travel can help support these values on a National and International scale,” said Suzanne Hobbs Baker, Director of the Nuclear Literacy Project and Chair for the NSW Big Event.

With free pre-registration - found at nuclearscienceweek.org - guests will be treated to a high-level dialogue about the future of nuclear technology in the Pacific Northwest and around the world. During the public symposium, experts from diverse backgrounds – including speakers such as Todd Allen, the Deputy Director of the Idaho National Laboratory, and Gwyneth Cravens, author of Power to Save the World - will engage in unscripted dialogue, which will also be live streamed online. Sessions will include topics such as “Nuclear Pop Culture: Evolving Narratives About Energy,” “Frontiers in Nuclear: Space, Evolution, Medicine and Beyond” and “Energy and Opportunity: Training and Careers in Tomorrow’s Nuclear World.”
